WARSAW, POLAND / RankWire.AI / – In the first seven months of 2026, irregular border crossings into the European Union decreased by 37%, according to initial border statistics. Frontex recorded approximately 61,000 detections from January through July, a drop compared to the same period in 2025. The majority of the EU’s primary migration routes showed reductions during this timeframe. The data encompass activities at external borders and reveal notable disparities between routes across the Mediterranean, Atlantic, and eastern borders.

The Eastern Mediterranean emerged as the busiest route in this period, with 20,232 detections, representing a 28% decrease from 28,068 reported last year. The Central Mediterranean saw a 55% decline, with 16,454 detections compared to 36,656. Together, these two routes made up roughly 60% of the EU’s reported entry detections. Libya continued to be the primary departure point for crossings along the Central Mediterranean route during the reporting interval.

Among the key routes, the Western Mediterranean experienced the most significant growth, with detections increasing by 37% to 11,217 from 8,175 in the first seven months of 2025. Sea crossings there rose to 8,648 from 7,096 the previous year. Land detections through June reached 2,569, up from 1,079. Conversely, the Western African route decreased sharply by 60%, totaling 4,682. Detections along the Western Balkan route fell by 26% to 4,910, while detections at the Eastern Land Border declined by 44% to 3,209.

Western Mediterranean’s Growth Contrasts with Overall Drop

Crossings through the United Kingdom via the Channel also saw a sharp decline during this period. Authorities documented 22,469 attempted or successful crossings from the EU side, a 46% decrease from 41,647 last year. These Channel figures are separate from the total for irregular entries into the bloc. Data further indicated 281 detections on the circular route to Albania, reflecting a 9% increase. The seven-month total excludes exceptional activity at the border in Ceuta, Spain, near the end of July.

Frontex derived these figures from preliminary EUROSUR data and estimates available up to Aug. 4. The agency may revise the numbers once national authorities provide updated information. Frontex’s count is based on detections rather than individual persons; one individual may appear multiple times if detected at different locations or during separate crossings. This distinction impacts the interpretation of route totals across the dataset.

Seven-Month Data Confirm Continuing Decline in 2026

The July update reinforces the ongoing year-on-year decrease observed in the first half of 2026. By June, authorities recorded over 49,000 irregular border crossings, also 37% below the 2025 figures. At that point, detections along the Western Mediterranean were 17% higher than the previous year, but the seven-month data revealed a larger increase of 37%. The Western African route experienced a 67% decline by June, which later narrowed to 60% over the entire period.

Approximately 3,800 Frontex personnel are stationed at the EU’s external borders, aiding national authorities with border management and maritime operations. They also assist member states with tasks related to EU migration and asylum policies. The latest data show that most major entry routes experienced significant decreases in irregular crossings during the first seven months of 2026. The Western Mediterranean remains the notable exception, while the Eastern and Central Mediterranean routes continue to represent the largest share of detected irregular entries.
