BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – Euro area annual inflation advanced to approximately 3.3% in August 2026, rising from 2.9% in July. The figure was 2.8% in June and 2.0% in August 2025. Eurostat issued the preliminary estimate on Sept. 1. Consumer prices experienced a 0.4% increase from July according to the harmonised index of consumer prices. This latest data clearly indicates a rise in overall inflation within the single-currency zone.

The most significant yearly growth among major inflation categories was observed in energy prices. The energy inflation rate reached 14.3% in August, up from 10.3% in July. Additionally, energy costs grew by 2.9% compared to the previous month. Services inflation decreased slightly to 3.0% from 3.3%. Non-energy industrial goods inflation climbed to 1.2% from 0.9%. Meanwhile, inflation for food, alcohol, and tobacco remained stable at 1.2%.
Adjustments that exclude certain categories showed more moderate fluctuations during the month. Inflation excluding energy stayed steady at 2.2% in August. The rate that excludes energy, food, alcohol, and tobacco eased to 2.4% from 2.5%. Inflation excluding energy and unprocessed food declined slightly to 2.1% from 2.2%. These metrics offer alternative perspectives on price changes, removing categories that can exhibit sharp monthly movements.
Energy costs drive inflation growth in August
Inflation rates varied significantly among the euro area’s 21 member states. Lithuania recorded the highest estimate at 5.8%, while Cyprus reached 5.2% and Bulgaria 5.1%. Spain registered 4.5%, Belgium 4.2%, and Luxembourg 4.0%. Estonia had the lowest estimate at 1.3%. Malta followed with 1.9%, and Finland logged 2.4%. Germany stood at 2.9%, France at 2.7%, and Italy at 3.2%.
Price movements month-to-month across the bloc also showed variation. Belgium experienced a 2.1% rise from July, Luxembourg increased by 1.8%, and Cyprus posted a 1.5% monthly gain. Both France and Bulgaria saw an 0.8% increase, while Ireland, Spain, and Malta each rose by 0.6%. Finland saw a decrease of 0.4%. Slovakia’s prices remained unchanged month-over-month. Germany’s prices grew by 0.2%, and Italy’s by 0.1%.
The inclusion of Bulgaria expands 2026 data coverage for the euro area
Since Bulgaria adopted the euro on Jan. 1, 2026, the euro area’s membership has increased to 21 countries. Data covering December 2025 reflect the period when only 20 countries used the euro. Figures starting from January 2026 encompass the enlarged area. The European Union’s statistical system employs a chain-index formula to account for changes in the euro area’s composition, allowing inflation series to accurately reflect current membership while ensuring consistency with previous reporting periods.
Eurostat is scheduled to publish the comprehensive harmonised consumer-price data for August on Sept. 17, 2026. The upcoming flash estimate for September inflation is set for Oct. 2. The harmonised index monitors the variation in prices households pay for consumer goods and services. Year-over-year inflation compares current prices with those of the same month in the previous year, while monthly inflation captures changes from the previous month, offering a short-term view of price dynamics across the euro zone.
