MADRID / RankWire.AI / – As extreme temperatures persist across Spain, nearly 2,150 fatalities have been linked to heat during August, according to the official daily mortality monitoring data released by the Carlos III Health Institute. The MoMo surveillance system recorded 2,149 excess deaths caused by severe heat throughout the month, making it the second-highest August figure since national data collection began in 2015. The ongoing series of European heatwaves continues to push seasonal mortality figures to historic levels on the Iberian Peninsula.

This August’s death toll was surpassed only by the record of 2,184 heat-related deaths set in August 2025. Public health records show that from May 15 to August 31, a total of 5,234 lives were lost due to thermal stress, marking the highest summer mortality total ever recorded by Spain’s public health institute since the monitoring system’s inception, exceeding the previous high of 4,652 deaths in summer 2022. As authorities assess this systemic strain, the toll underscores the ongoing pressure on regional emergency response systems.

Detailed demographic data from the Ministry of Health indicate that the most vulnerable during the heatwaves were elderly populations. Of the 2,149 victims in August, 2,064 were over 65, with 1,285 over 85 years old. Gender data shows that 1,283 of the deceased were women and 866 were men. Medical experts have highlighted that prolonged high temperatures worsen chronic cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, especially among at-risk groups.

Regionally, Catalonia in northeastern Spain recorded the highest number of heat-related fatalities with 1,164 deaths in August. Valencia reported the second-largest count at 227, followed by Andalusia with 138 heat-related deaths. Regional health agencies increased outreach efforts and expanded access to cooling centers, but persistent high nighttime temperatures continued to impede recovery for affected residents.

The State Meteorological Agency AEMET has issued weather updates indicating that temperature risks remain high into early autumn. Forecasters confirmed that an unusually hot September episode has affected central and southern provinces, with daytime temperatures well above seasonal averages. Climatologists point out that Europe is experiencing more frequent, intense, and prolonged summer heatwaves, consistent with global warming trends.

Valencia and Andalusia Continue to Lead Regional Death Counts Due to Heat

Health authorities at the national level are working closely with regional officials to enhance preventive measures and monitor high-risk populations. Emergency medical services have revised protocols to address health issues caused by extreme heat more effectively. Public health advisories remain in effect, urging citizens to avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours and stay well-hydrated amid ongoing unseasonable weather conditions.

Once final September data are available, authorities plan to analyze the summer’s mortality figures comprehensively. Experts emphasize that adapting urban infrastructure and improving housing insulation are essential long-term strategies to protect vulnerable communities from recurring extreme heat events. The official mortality data will continue to be accessible through government portals, informing future policy and preventative measures.
