Record-Breaking Summer Temperatures in Italy Since 1950 Highlighted by 2026 Data

ROME, ITALY / RankWire.AI / – Across the Mediterranean, recent climate patterns have resulted in exceptionally high temperatures, with Italy experiencing its warmest summer since 1950 in 2026, pushing the national seasonal average to 24.3 degrees Celsius. This figure surpasses the previous record of 23.6 degrees set in 2003. Researchers analyzed the meteorological summer from June through August using a long-term climate dataset. The outcome set a new peak in Italy’s 76-year temperature record. The National Research Council’s Institute for Bioeconomy compiled these results from temperatures measured two metres above ground.

Italy sets 2026 summer heat record dating back to 1950
    2. Record summer temperatures put Italy among the major European heat stories of 2026.

August recorded the highest monthly temperature of the season, with an average of 25.6 degrees Celsius across Italy. This level was 5.2 degrees higher than the August average from 1951-1980 and 3.5 degrees above the 1991-2020 norm. It also broke the previous August record of 24.6 degrees, set in 2024. August 2017 previously held a recent high at 24.0 degrees. The new data placed August 2026 well above both of these benchmarks on Italy’s temperature timeline.

July also achieved a record in the dataset, marking Italy’s hottest July and August since records began in 1950. The summer followed an especially warm spring, which averaged 12.1 degrees Celsius nationwide. The same temperature was recorded in spring 2024, tying that seasonal record. From January through August 2026, every month experienced higher temperatures than the same months in 2025, indicating that elevated heat persisted well beyond the peak summer months across much of Italy.

August heat elevates national temperature averages

Throughout the first eight months of 2026, much of Italy endured intense heat. Approximately 70% of the country saw temperature anomalies exceeding 1 degree Celsius, while around 40% experienced anomalies over 2 degrees. The northwestern plains and sections of the Apennines recorded some of the most significant deviations from typical temperatures, including key agricultural zones. Drought and heat also impacted farmland, with cities like Rome, Florence, and Turin experiencing recurrent periods of high summer temperatures.

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts maintains the ERA5-Land climate dataset, which served as the basis for the National Research Council’s Institute for Bioeconomy calculations. This comprehensive land-surface data archive extends back to 1950, allowing researchers to compare current temperatures with those from previous decades across Italy. The 2026 summer average surpassed Italy’s 2003 record by 0.7 degrees Celsius, and August alone ended 1.0 degree higher than the previous monthly record set just two years earlier.

Mediterranean experiences record-high sea temperatures during summer

The Mediterranean region also saw notably high sea-surface temperatures, with July 2026 averaging about 27 degrees Celsius, marking the highest July average in the dataset dating back to 1993. Additionally, 79% of the Mediterranean experienced at least one intense marine heatwave during the summer. While these sea temperature measurements come from a different dataset than Italy’s land-based figures, both records confirm widespread and unusually high temperatures across the Mediterranean during the same period.

This record heat in Italy occurred amid a broader pattern of rising temperatures across Europe, where climate monitoring indicates rapid warming in recent decades. Europe has been identified as the continent warming faster than any other on Earth. The summer of 2026 also brought drought conditions and wildfires to parts of Europe. In Italy, the latest data added to a series of record summer temperatures, with the national average of 24.3 degrees standing as the highest Italian meteorological summer reading since the dataset began in 1950.
