EuroWire, MANCHESTER: Manchester City moved back into the center of the Premier League title race on Sunday after Erling Haaland scored the decisive goal in a 2-1 home win over Arsenal, a result that cut the leaders’ advantage to three points and left City with a game in hand with six rounds remaining. The match at Etihad Stadium turned quickly and stayed tight throughout, with both sides creating chances in a contest that carried major weight in the closing stretch of the season.

City went ahead in the 16th minute when Rayan Cherki finished a move that exposed space in the Arsenal defense, but the lead lasted only two minutes. Kai Havertz brought Arsenal level in the 18th minute, capping a sharp response that kept the visitors in the contest and restored balance after an opening spell in which City had pressed aggressively and looked more likely to strike first. The equalizer shifted the rhythm of a match played at high tempo and with little margin for error.

Haaland settled the match in the 65th minute, converting the chance that proved decisive and delivering the goal City had chased for much of the second half. The striker’s finish ended a Premier League scoring drought that had stretched back to February and restored the edge to Pep Guardiola’s side after Arsenal had threatened through Havertz and Eberechi Eze. The closing stages brought further pressure, but City held its structure and protected the lead through a tense final spell.

    Manchester City Tighten Title Race

The result left Arsenal on 70 points from 33 matches, while Manchester City moved to 67 from 32, a gap that kept the title race open entering the final weeks of the campaign. The outcome also changed the immediate pressure on both teams in the run-in, with Arsenal still holding first place but City now closer and with fewer matches played. At this stage of the season, the standings gave the victory added significance beyond the result itself.

Guardiola said the win gave City hope, while stressing that Arsenal remained in control of first place because it stayed on top of the table. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said the race remained open, with the teams still separated by a narrow margin. Their assessments reflected the table after a contest that was intense from the opening whistle and often decided by fine details rather than prolonged dominance from either side, with possession and territory shifting repeatedly across both halves.

    Late Tension At Etihad

Arsenal pushed for another equalizer as the match moved into its final phase, and City’s goalkeeper and back line were forced to remain alert under sustained pressure. Havertz was involved repeatedly, and Eze also came close as Arsenal searched for a second goal. The game’s physical edge rose late on, with Haaland and Gabriel both booked in a tense finish that underscored the stakes of a meeting between the division’s top two contenders at a decisive point in the season.

For City, the win delivered three points at a critical stage and reinforced Haaland’s central role in the title chase after a performance that combined patience with decisive finishing. For Arsenal, the defeat left little margin for error despite remaining in first place. Sunday’s result ensured the Premier League race will continue with the gap narrow and the balance of matches still uneven between the leading clubs.
